The movie Black Panther is based on the Marvel Comics Superhero. This nomination made history as the first comic book or superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture. Black Klansman is an explosive true story from director Spike Lee. It chronicles African American Detective Ron Stallworth's infiltration of the KKK in Colorado. The powerful end of the film shows news footage from the recent horrors in Charlottesville and President Trump's both sides reaction. Bohemian Rhapsody follows the life of Freddie Mercury and the band Queen. The main actor Rami Malek is currently considered one of if not the front runner for Best Actor due to his uncanny resemblance of Mercury. A Star Is Born is another movie about musical artists however it is fictional. It is notable for Lady GaGa's star turn as the lead actress. She is currently in a tight race with Glen Close ("The Wife") for Best Actress. Vice offers a sarcastic account of the life of former Vice President Dick Cheney. Bale is in a very close balloting race with Malek for Best Actor. He has been achieving acclaim for capturing the mannerisms and personality of Cheney. The Favourite is a period piece. Roma is notable for being the first streaming service film to be nominated. Netflix did a limited theatrical release of it in the United States and Mexico. This dual approach allows it to compete for both Best Picture and Best Foreign Film. A win in both categories will be historic. Green Book is a true story about a pianist who hires a driver to take him to gigs in the South.
